Intel Reaches for the Sky

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Intel announced a new, 3D method of chip building. The new process will allow for  computer chips to process information quicker and with less power in less space.  The third dimension was necessary to increase power and speed while reducing the amount of space required. Think about it like a developer in New York City. Land is expensive, so the best way to make efficient use of it would be to build skyward, increasing efficiency while utilizing the same or less space.

Intel says that their new chips will be 37%  faster in low-voltage applications and would cut power consumption by as much as 50%. “The timing of the announcement Wednesday is significant, said Dr. Bohr, because it is evidence that the world’s largest chip maker is not slipping from the pace of doubling the number of transistors that can be etched onto a sliver of silicon every two years, a phenomenon known as Moore’s Law”

3D Design

Competitors claim that Intel might be going down the wrong path by investing billions into an unproven technology, but the rewards of accomplishing this feat could outweigh the risks.

How do you see this advancement in Chip technology affecting technology in general? How will it affect the IT industry and business computing?

The Apple iPad 2: A TechRepublic Review

Monday, April 25th, 2011
Apple iPad 2

Apple iPad 2

Jason Hiner of TechRepublic reviews the Apple iPad 2 and examines why it is still winning with business users. Hiner highlights the standout features including the simple, one button design,  the burgeoning ecosystem of business applications, 10+ hours of battery life  and the price.  Hiner, on the “Bottom line for business”, writes:

“The iPad 2 is a minimal refinement of the original iPad that adds a better screen, a slimmer form factor, and a dual core processor (the new cameras are barely worth mentioning). However, by retaining its great battery life, simple user experience, huge catalog of apps, and low price, the iPad 2 has enough to maintain a stronghold over the nascent multitouch tablet market. Even among business professionals — many of whom use the iPad for both work and personal use — the iPad 2 remains the tablet of choice. And, judging by the early competitors so far this year, it’s not in danger of being dethroned in 2011.”

The iPad 2 is certainly beneficial to students, IT, and business professionals alike because of its customizable nature and convenient, mobile sensibilities. Because it is essentially an application delivery system the iPad 2 will continue to improve for specific purposes as more and more applications are introduced to the already budding app store.

Want the best IT Training and an iPad 2? This is the last week PrepLogic will be offering an iPad 2 FREE with Ultimate Access.

Utilize your iPad, iPad 2, and other devices for your PrepLogic training. We have compatible training  for certifications including Network+, CompTIA A+, CCNA Certification and the MCITP Certification.

The Importance of Investing in Your Future

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

We hear the word investment thrown around constantly. We invest in many things in life, from relationships to the stock market. The end result, we hope, is some sort of benefit to us—a wonderful spouse or perhaps money. Investments are incredibly important to us as humans and as individuals. Every investment we make in life—and there are many—have some sort of effect, be it positive or negative.

One of the most important investments you can make in life is that of your Education. Education is an incredibly powerful asset because it can lead to impressive outcomes–success, opportunity, understanding, and even happiness. When you invest in your education, you are ensuring that you have control of your life.

Warren Buffett, Investor/Billionaire

You must invest in yourself. Any certified IT Professional will tell you how grateful they are to have spent the time and energy to create a future for themselves. They are working in an ever expanding industry doing what they love and making a nice living doing it. Yes, they spent hours studying, learning and perhaps struggling—but now they aren’t. They are settled, knowledgeable, employed and certified.

Sometimes, making an investment can be hard. It’s easy to be short sited and only see what we are losing, rather than what we are gaining. What must be remembered is that long term gains are far greater than the short term losses involved with making the proper investments in our future. Do you think Warren Buffett regrets spending $25 to buy a Pinball machine to place in barbershops at the age of 15, only to own several more machines months later? Absolutely not. This investment preceded a long, successful career which placed him in the running as the wealthiest person in the world.

Chances are you have some things in mind already. Ideas you have been toying with. Perhaps you want to start a business or invent something. Maybe you want to build up your certifications to increase your job options. Regardless of what your investment is, don’t be afraid to make it. Get out there and give it all you got, because that is the only way to make big things happen. You have to just go out and do it. Then one day, when you reflect on your life journey, you will remember the sacrifices you made to achieve your goals and become what you always wanted to be.

What goals in life do you need to invest in? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Computer and Math-Related Jobs in High Demand

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

With unemployment still at an unsettling 9%, many people may be surprised to hear there are actually fields experiencing labor shortages. One of those fields lacking qualified candidates is computer engineering, reports The Wall Street Journal.

According to the Conference Board, countrywide there were an estimated four unemployed people for every job opening posted online in December. That statistic may sound discouraging, but if you are looking for a computer or math-related position, such as JavaScript engineer or software engineer, there are jobs to be had. And well paying jobs at that!

The Wall Street Journal reports, many companies are having trouble finding highly skilled applicants for technical positions, particularly when it comes to computer programming.  Gowalla Inc, a location-based social networking company, faces this very problem in their search for four computer programmers. Many of the skills needed by its programmers are so rare that the company is now willing to hire computer engineers without related experience and train them on the job, says their chief executive Josh Williams.

Accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP also struggles to find applicants with the right skills set. When Ernst & Young advertises for openings in its finance and IT consulting practices, which require experience and sometimes advanced degrees, they might only get 10 résumés in a week, and even fewer will meet the qualifications, aid Wendy Edgar, Americas director of experienced recruiting told The Wall Street Journal.

According to the Conference Board, even if all 225,500 job seekers whose last jobs were computer and math-related were to take a current opening, there would still be nearly 350,000 positions left to fill. And these positions are paid well. Very well. At Gowalla, a software engineer with no experience can start at $50,000, with potential  to earn $150,00 or more.  Glassdoor.com reports information technology advisory managers at Ernst & Young can expect to make between $80,000 and $180,000 a year.

The combination of job openings and pay scale, particularly in this slow-to-hire economy, make the fields of computer programming and software engineering undeniably attractive.

Practice Exams $59 through August 31

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

For the rest of the month, PrepLogic is keeping the price of our practice exams lowered to just $59. As many of you know, almost 80% of certified professionals use practice exams to pass their tests. So, if you’re working towards passing a certification exam it’s very important that you get a great practice exam that will help you get prepared for exam day.

For years, one of our most popular practice exams is for the CCNA certification. The Cisco CCNA Certification is still one of the most important credentials a technician can earn. PrepLogic’s Practice Exams give you the most practical and reliable training you can get for this exam with 6 complete practice test modules. You’ll have the option of using simulation mode, which is a straight up simulation of your exam, or learning mode which gives you the opportunity to customize and randomize the exam for your own needs. There’s over 340 questions available in this practice exam, which will give you plenty of experience answering questions before test day. Want to test your skills now? Check out this sample question from our CCNA Practice Exam:

Question
You have two routers within your network, and you need to enable RIP as your routing protocol. The routers are connected by the 192.168.1.0/24 network. Router A also has an interface in the 10.1.1.0/24 network. Router B has an interface in the 172.16.0.0/16 network. What are all the commands necessary to enable RIP on router B, and ensure all connected networks are reachable by router A?

Select the best answer.

A. router rip
B. router rip network 192.168.1.0
C. enable router rip network 10.0.0.0 network 192.168.1.0
D. router rip network 172.16.0.0 network 192.168.1.0

Exhibit:

Q63-Exhibit

The correct answer is D

Explanations
Answer A is incorrect because this command would just activate the routing protocol.

Answer B is incorrect. In order to ensure that router A learns all the connected networks on router B, you must use the network command for each interface, and directly connnected interfaces.

Answer C is incorrect because “enable router rip” is not a correct command.

Answer D is the correct choice. The “router rip” command activates RIP as the routing protocol. The “network” command then activates RIP processing for interfaces associated with the networks. In order for router B to propagate and receive information, both the 192.168.1.0 and 172.16.0.0 network statements must be present.

PrepLogic’s CCNA Practice Exam also provides advanced scoring and testing features to help increase your learning speed, as well as integration with Lecture Series audio training to give you audio coaching along the way. The everyday price for the CCNA practice exam is over $100, so now is a great time to pick it up for just $59. All of our practice exams will be discounted from now through August 31. If you have any questions about the CCNA Practice Exam (or any of our other exams for Microsoft MCITP certification, CompTIA A+ certification, Cisco certification and many more) give our guys a call at 1-800-418-6789. Thanks and good luck on your exam.
