A Reality Show for the IT Pro

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Exciting opportunity! Microsoft is creating a new online reality show called “Career Factor” (a clever play on words of the popular TV reality show “Fear Factor”). The basis of the show is centered on cast members documenting their five month journey to improving their technology careers with the help of Microsoft resources and training. The cast members will document their journey using web videos and social media outlets.

Microsoft seeks “outgoing, social media savvy individuals” looking to better or advance their IT careers.  Each cast member will have their own story arc, in which he/she will set a specific career goal and work with the Microsoft team to achieve that goal. Microsoft seeks to cast the people for the following story arcs:

A few of the benefits a Career Factor cast member will receive include:

  • Free training materials to support your goal on Career Factor. This includes training courses, books, and certification exams that would be helpful in meeting your goal.
  • Free admittance to all Microsoft Certified Career Conferences (a series of online career fairs)
  • Personal attention through mentors and the Microsoft community
  • Filming equipment (Microsoft Webcam & Handheld camera) for you to keep

The casting application is due November 13, 2010. The application process includes a written application for each story arc a person is applying for and a short video (1-2 minutes) introducing yourself and telling the Career Factor team why you are the ideal candidate. Every story arc has a few requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the role.

This a great, fun opportunity for anyone interested in a career in technology and a once in a lifetime chance to gain significant publicity throughout the tech world.

What’s Different about the New CCNA Voice Certification?

Monday, October 25th, 2010

If you are working toward a Cisco Certification in the Voice technologies track, you need to be aware of some major changes. On Thursday we posted a blog article about these changes. Here is a quick overview:

  • The CCNA Voice certification has been updated with new content and a new exam titled ICOMM v8.0 640-461.
  • The CCVP certification has been re-branded as the CCNP Voice and all five exams have also been updated.

Today we are going to focus on the new CCNA Voice exam, whose full title is, “Introducing Cisco Voice and Unified Communications Administration (ICOMM v8.0) 640-461 exam”.

The old CCNA Voice certification had two exam options. A candidate could either take the IIUC 640-460 exam or the CVOICE 642-436 exam. A candidate only needed to pass one of these exams to earn a CCNA Voice certification.   Now, a candidate has another option, the new ICOMM v8.0 640-461 exam. Eventually, the ICOMM v8.0 640-461 will be the ONLY exam a person can take to earn the CCNA Voice. Beginning March 1, 2011 the IUC 640-460 and CVOICE 642-436 will no longer be offered. But until that date, CCNA Voice candidates can take any one of these three exams to earn their CCNA Voice.

The new CCNA Voice exam title now has the word “Administration” in it.  This is, of course, to represent the new exam’s focus on administrative topics. These topics include:

  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM)
  • CUCM Express
  • Cisco Unity Connection
  • Cisco Unified Presence

The certification is well suited for people in IT who have voice administration roles. Additionally, the new ICOMM v8.0 640-461 requires more hands on practice, particularly with the CUCM, Unity Connection, and Unified Presence topics.  A minor change to note is the new ICOMM v8.0 640-461 is currently only offered in English.  The Cisco website has not yet published a release date for the ICOMM v8.0 in other languages.  The old IIUC 640-460 exam is offered in English, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, French and Spanish.

The eventual elimination of CVOICE 642-436 for the CCNA Voice does affect candidates who then wish to go on to CCNP Voice (previously called CCVP). Earning a CCNA Voice is a prerequisite to earning the CCNP Voice. The old CCNA Voice candidates were able to take the CVOICE v6.0, get their CCNA Voice certification from passing ONLY the CVOICE v6.0 and then use that passing score as one of their pre-requisites for the CCNP Voice (CVOICE is one of the five exams needed to become CCNP Voice certified). So, if a CCNA candidate chose to take the CVOICE instead of the IIUC, they would only need to take four more exams to become a CCNP Voice.  Come March 1, 2011 CCNA Voice candidates will have no choice but to take the ICOMM v8.0 640-461 (the CVOICE option will be eliminated). Thus, to become a CCNP Voice after March 1, 2011 you will have to take a total of six exams, the ICOMM v8.0 to be CCNA Voice certified and then five exams, including CVOICE v8.0, to be CCNP Voice certified.

You can read more about these changes at the Cisco Learning Network website.

Updates to Cisco Voice Certifications: New Exams for CCNA Voice and CCNP Voice

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Cisco, the vendor behind the well respected CCNA certification, has announced a few major changes to their Voice certifications.  The company has updated their Voice certifications to be more in line with recent advances in data, voice and video convergence.   The two certifications that have been updated are the CCNA Voice and the CCVP certification.   The CCNA Voice certification has been updated with new content and a new exam titled ICOMM v8.0 (640-461).   The CCVP certification has been re-branded as the CCNP Voice and all five exams have also been updated.    Both the CCNA Voice and CCNP Voice certifications are intended for people in IT who work with Unified Communication applications and voice networks.

Changes to CCNA Voice
The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Voice certification validates associate-level knowledge and skills required to administer a voice network.  The CCNA Voice certification demonstrates skills in VoIP technologies, such as IP PBX, IP telephony, handset, call control, and voicemail solutions.

The new CCNA Voice certification exam is called the “Introducing Cisco Voice and Unified Communications Administration (ICOMM v8.0) 640-461 exam.   This exam tests a candidate’s knowledge of the architecture, components, functionality, and features of Cisco Unified Communications solutions.  The ICOMM (640-461) exam replaces the IIUC (640-460) and CVOICE (642-436) exam.

The last day to test for the CCNA Voice certification using the IIUC (640-460) or CVOICE (642-436) exam is February 28, 2011.

Changes to CCVP, Now Called CCNP Voice
The Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Voice certification, previously called the CCVP, validates advanced knowledge and skills required to integrate collaboration and voice applications into underlying network architectures.  The CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) Voice is the next level up after the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) Voice certification, which is a prerequisite to CCNP Voice.  The CCNP Voice certification demonstrates that an IT professional has a strong and sophisticated skills set in implementing, operating, configuring, and troubleshooting a converged IP network.  The CCNP Voice curriculum  focuses on Cisco Unified Communications Manager (formerly Unified Call Manager), quality of service (QoS), gateways, gatekeepers, IP phones, voice applications, and utilities on Cisco routers and Cisco Catalyst switches. Additionally, the integration and troubleshooting of Cisco Unified Communications applications are now covered in the CCNP Voice, specifically the Cisco Unity Connection and Cisco Unified Presence applications.

Beginning March 1st, 2011 the following new CCNP Voice exams must be passed in order to earn the CCNP Voice certification:

  • 642-437: Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Voice over IP and QoS v8.0 (CVOICE v8.0)
  • 642-447: Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 1 v8.0 (CIPT1 v8.0)
  • 642-457: Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 2 v8.0 (CIPT2 v8.0)
  • 642-427: Troubleshooting Cisco Unified Communications v8.0  (TVOICE v8.0)
  • 642-467: Integrating Cisco Unified Communications Applications v8.0 (CAPPS v8.0)

The last day to test using current CCVP exams is  February 28, 2011.  The CCVP exams consist of:

  • 642-436: Cisco Voice over IP (CVOICE v6.0)
  • 642-446: Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 1 (CIPT1 v6.0)
  • 642-456: Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 2  (CIPT2 v6.0)
  • 642-426: Troubleshooting Cisco Unified Communications Systems (TUC)
  • 642-642: Quality of Service (QoS)

From now until February 28, 2011 candidates who take and pass the older exams (versions 6.0) will still receive the title of CCNP Voice.  CCVP candidates can mix and match CCVP exams with CCNP Voice exams.  For example, a candidate can take the old TUC and QoS exams and fulfill the other three exam requirements (CVOICE, CIPT1, CIPT2) with the new 8.0 versions.   However, beginning March 1, 2011 Voice candidates must pass the new exams (versions 8.0) to become a CCNP Voice.

Spotlight On Windows 7 Configuration (70-680) LearnSmart Video Training

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

One of our most in-demand LearnSmart Video Training courses is the CBT (computer based training) Windows 7 Configuration (70-680) LearnSmart Video Training course.  This should come as no surprise considering the wide spread use and popularity of Windows 7, Microsoft’s newest enterprise class operating system. So, today we are going to spend some time talking about the Windows 7 Configuration LearnSmart Video Training, highlighting all the cool features that make this training one of our customer’s top picks.

To begin, let’s talk a little bit about the actual Windows 7 operating system.  Windows 7 can be considered the launching pad for many newer technologies.  One of these being the focus on 64-bit computing.  While still able to support 32-bit computing, Windows 7 can also be deployed as a 64-bit operating system.  Windows 7 is equipped with a number of new features that make it the most attractive and fitting operating system for today’s modern environments.   A couple of these new features include the ability to encrypt portable drivers, the ability for users to automatically reconnect if their VPN connection is lost and users can connect to a corporate network from multiple locations without initiating a VPN, but still maintaining a high level of security.

In PrepLogic’s Windows 7 Configuration LearnSmart Video Training course, Windows technology expert Tom Carpenter explains, step-by-step, how to implement, configure and maintain Windows 7.  Whether you want to deploy Windows 7 on a couple computers or an entire enterprise, Tom has got you covered with 14 hours of video instruction.  The Windows 7 video training is enhanced with all of PrepLogic’s new LearnSmart features.  These new features include integrated audio and PDF study guides, which can be sent to e-readers, an expanded video index, IT glossary and a “Personal Trainer” tool that helps you set a training completion date goal and keeps track of your progress through out the course.  The new Content Reader delivers “wiki-style” study guide content related to the video segments, so while you are watching a video on “Managing Network Configurations” the Content Reader displays information about “Managing Network Configurations”.  This information in the Content Reader can then be sent to your iPad, Kindle or Nook.

The Windows 7 Configuration course is designed to teach you the fundamental knowledge base you need to implement, configure and maintain Windows 7 in your work environment as well as prepare you for the TS: Windows 7, Configuring (70-680) exam. Passing this exam earns you the MCTS Windows 7, Configuration certification.  This is a widely popular exam because passing the 70-680 counts as credit toward three MCITP certifications, the MCITP Enterprise Admin, MCITP Enterprise Desktop Admin 7 and the MCITP Enterprise Desktop Support Technician 7.  MCITP candidates are IT professionals capable of deploying, building, designing, optimizing, and operating technologies for a particular job role, in this case job roles that deal with the Windows 7 operating system.

Windows 7 Configuration LearnSmart Video Training offers comprehensive, online CBT that is an affordable alternative to expensive, inconvenient classroom courses and dull, tedious textbooks.  Any IT professional who works with Microsoft technologies needs to be up-to-date and proficient with the latest operating system. PrepLogic’s Windows 7 Configuration training ensures that you have the knowledge and high level skills to properly install, configure and manage Microsoft’s latest operating system so that you can efficiently mange your business’s network environment.

Microsoft Temporarily Suspends Active Directory (83-640)

Microsoft Temporarily Suspends Active Directory (83-640)
Microsoft has temporarily suspended the TS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring (83-640) exam due to issues with the performance based portion of the exam. All students who wish to earn Active Directory credit for their MCTS or MCITP certification may take the multiple choice based TS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring (70-640) exam.
In response to customer feedback, Microsoft has decided to suspend Exam 83-640. Prometric will immediately begin delivering a version of this exam that does not contain lab-based questions. Candidates who are registered for this exam will be automatically rescheduled to take the 70-640 version of the exam at the same time and testing center, and they do not need to contact Prometric unless they want to change their registration to a different time or location.
The content that a candidate must know is identical for either exam, the difference is in the delivery method. The 70-640 exam contains 100% multiple choice questions, while the 83-640 includes a percentage of performance-based lab type questions. Repeated issues with these questions is why the exam has been suspended for re-tooling.
Microsoft is removing the virtual labs due to increased reports of performance issues. However, Microsoft is committed to incorporating performance-based items in our certification exams and will continue working to incorporate performance-based items into exams in a way that ensures a world-class testing experience.
Since the objectives for the exams remain the same, students who have training courses labeled 83-640 may use those products to prepare for the 70-640 exam.

New and Improved PrepLogic Learning System!

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Over the past few weeks our users have noticed some really cool new features and improvements that have been added to our Online LearnSmart Video Training. These new features are all part of our upgrade from Online LearnSmart Video Training to our brand new PrepLogic Learning System. This new system provides all the excellent features and benefits of LearnSmart Video Training, plus the extra bonus of enhanced training, custom study guides, audio training and much more. It gives you the total training solution you need to pass your exam and get certified more quickly and effectively than ever before. So, let’s take this opportunity to go over some of the new features you’ll see the next time you log in to your LearnSmart Training System.

LearnSmart Video Training

LearnSmart Video Training provides start-to-finish instruction from experts with years of training experience. LearnSmart is a video based training product created, written and developed by IT and vocational skills expert trainers. Each course contains complete instruction sufficient for certification exams from universally respected certification bodies, such as Microsoft, CompTIA, VMWare and Cisco. LearnSmart Video Training features elegant, studio quality presentation with full color video, graphics, screenshots and demos.

The new PrepLogic LearnSmart Video Training features improved video controls, where you can adjust screen size and start, stop and rewind video at your leisure. This allows you to work at a speed that is the most conducive to your pace of learning, and thus the most effective. We’ve also added the ability to toggle video from the main window to the smaller, brand new Content Reader. The Reader delivers study guide material related to your video segments in an easy to navigate window.

Accessing your personal PrepLogic Learning System account is now easier than ever with our new and improved log in process. You can access your individualized Online LearnSmart Video Training by logging into your account through the PrepLogic homepage. Once you have logged in, you simply click on the “Online LearnSmart Video Training Icon” where you will then be prompted to your personal video course catalog, containing all of the certification training courses you have purchased. PrepLogic offers a wide variety of IT certification exam training, such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft MCITP Enterprise Administrator and Server Administrator, CCNA certification training and more.

Video Index

The Video Index feature functions as a table of contents for the course. The Video Index lists every segment of the course, allowing you to click on different segments and watch each segment’s corresponding video as you choose. You can watch specific segments repeatedly, in the case of more difficult material, or even skip over segments that you are already familiar with. Each video segment in the Video Index lists the length of time in that particular segment and becomes highlighted in the Index after the segment has been viewed. The Video Index organizes the course study in an easy to navigate, easy to read fashion, in which you, the student, are in control of the course and can keep track of your progress as you make your way through the material.

PrepLogic has greatly improved the functionality of the Video Index. You can now shrink and expand the streamlined Index to your preferred size. We’ve also improved the visibility and usability of the Index, which helps keep you organized through out your training by clearly showing, in a syllabus type format, the order of the videos in your training course, as well as keeping track of which videos you have watched in previous sessions.

Starred Training

Another new facet of the Video Index is the “Starred Training” feature. To the left of each segment listed in the Index, there is the option to click on a white star, which becomes yellow when clicked, marking that segment “starred” and categorizing it in your “My Starred Items” folder. This feature allows you to mark those segments you find the most important or critical to your course of study. Clicking on the “Starred Training” icon above the Video Index changes the Video Index to show only the items you starred, letting you focus on those starred videos. Choosing specific videos you want to watch, through the Starred Training feature, allows you to create your own custom course, where you can focus specifically, on what you need to be learning.

Content Reader

New Feature! The PrepLogic Learning System now includes a smart content reader that delivers “wiki-style” study guide content related to your video into an easy to use window labeled “Reader” below the Video Index. You can follow along in the Reader while watching video, enlarge the Reader content to the main screen, switching the video to the smaller screen, or email yourself the content in the Reader, creating your own PDF study guide that you can use on the go. The Reader works in conjunction with the video training for a truly comprehensive exam training experience.

IT Glossary

Recently added to the PrepLogic Learning System is the IT Glossary. This tool enables users to look up key IT terms and their definitions. Along with the definition of a term, the glossary provides related tags to that term. There are thousands of essential technical terms in the glossary, relating to fields such as networking, security, data base management and project management. The glossary is a quick and easy tool that makes sure you are familiar and knowledgeable with the language of popular certification exams like CISSP, Oracle, PMP, Microsoft MCITP, and Microsoft MCSE.

Download Extras

The Download Extras feature allows you to download custom study guides and audio training. PrepLogic is committed to making your IT certification training extremely accessible, so while you can download the PDF’s instantly to your computer you can also send the content to your mobile device, Kindle, iPad, Blackberry, Barnes and Noble Nook and many more devices. Now you can study for your IT certification exam virtually anywhere!

Audio Training

The audio segments are set up just like the Video Index, but in their own “Audio Index”, and can be played on your computer, just like the Video Lecture Series. When listening to the Audio Training Series on your computer, in your PrepLogic Learning System, glossary terms appear on the video screen to enhance your learning experience.

You can now enjoy your Lecture Series audio training online, or download it for use on your MP3 player, iPhone, iPod or any other device that plays audio. You can study in your car, at the gym or even walking the dog! Audio training helps improve memory retention so learning can occur more quickly and training can be completed faster. With the ability to listen to your certification training program on any portable audio device you will be confident and ready to take that CCNA certification exam or CompTIA Network+ certification exam in no time!

Most Recent Training Sessions

Below the video screen, you will find an index of your most recent training sessions. Re-live recent training sessions with a single click. You can also see what date you engaged in that session, as well as the time and duration. This tool serves as an excellent reminder of what you studied in previous sessions, and is a super-convenient way to recap your prior lessons.

Personal Trainer

PrepLogic developed the Personal Trainer tool to help you not only create a realistic study plan, but more importantly, help keep you on track with that study plan. When you begin your PrepLogic Learning System training, the Personal Trainer prompts you to set an exact date (referred to as the target completion date) of when you want to be finished with the training and fully ready to take the desired certification exam, along with the number of days per week you will be training. The Personal Trainer then calculates how many hours per week you should train in order meet that completion date.

The Personal Trainer keeps track of your progress in the course and lets you know, at the current rate you are training, if you are on pace to finish by your goal date. If you are not, the Personal Trainer tells you the expected date you will be finished if you keep at the current pace and how many hours behind your target pace you actually are. The “Stay on Pace!” reminder tells you which video to begin training with that day and which video to continue training through in order to keep your original pace. The Personal Trainer also keeps a calendar, tracking what days you trained and for how long. The calendar color codes your training into three categories: “On Pace”, “Behind Target Pace” and “Goal at Risk”. This serves as a motivational tool, and makes it clear to you how you are progressing.

The Personal Trainer Preview, conveniently located at the bottom of the screen, keeps a constant tab on your progression through the program, continuously showing you, percentage wise, how much training you have completed, how many days left remaining until your target completion date and how many hours per week you should be training in order to obtain that goal. The Personal Trainer, in combination with the Video Index, provides the much desired structure and direction of a classroom syllabus, but is actually designed by you, which allows for the flexibility you need, at a speed you can handle.

The innovative PrepLogic Learning System was designed with you in mind. The PrepLogic Learning System helps you learn faster and train smarter. The combination of Online LearnSmart Video Training, Audio Training, customizable study guides, flexible training schedules, and many more unique features make IT certification training with PrepLogic simple and enjoyable.

If you would like to inquire further about the PrepLogic Learning System or have any questions, please call 1-800-418-6789. Thank you for your interest and good luck with your IT certification training!

Practice Exams $59 through August 31

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

For the rest of the month, PrepLogic is keeping the price of our practice exams lowered to just $59. As many of you know, almost 80% of certified professionals use practice exams to pass their tests. So, if you’re working towards passing a certification exam it’s very important that you get a great practice exam that will help you get prepared for exam day.

For years, one of our most popular practice exams is for the CCNA certification. The Cisco CCNA Certification is still one of the most important credentials a technician can earn. PrepLogic’s Practice Exams give you the most practical and reliable training you can get for this exam with 6 complete practice test modules. You’ll have the option of using simulation mode, which is a straight up simulation of your exam, or learning mode which gives you the opportunity to customize and randomize the exam for your own needs. There’s over 340 questions available in this practice exam, which will give you plenty of experience answering questions before test day. Want to test your skills now? Check out this sample question from our CCNA Practice Exam:

Question
You have two routers within your network, and you need to enable RIP as your routing protocol. The routers are connected by the 192.168.1.0/24 network. Router A also has an interface in the 10.1.1.0/24 network. Router B has an interface in the 172.16.0.0/16 network. What are all the commands necessary to enable RIP on router B, and ensure all connected networks are reachable by router A?

Select the best answer.

A. router rip
B. router rip network 192.168.1.0
C. enable router rip network 10.0.0.0 network 192.168.1.0
D. router rip network 172.16.0.0 network 192.168.1.0

Exhibit:

Q63-Exhibit

The correct answer is D

Explanations
Answer A is incorrect because this command would just activate the routing protocol.

Answer B is incorrect. In order to ensure that router A learns all the connected networks on router B, you must use the network command for each interface, and directly connnected interfaces.

Answer C is incorrect because “enable router rip” is not a correct command.

Answer D is the correct choice. The “router rip” command activates RIP as the routing protocol. The “network” command then activates RIP processing for interfaces associated with the networks. In order for router B to propagate and receive information, both the 192.168.1.0 and 172.16.0.0 network statements must be present.

PrepLogic’s CCNA Practice Exam also provides advanced scoring and testing features to help increase your learning speed, as well as integration with Lecture Series audio training to give you audio coaching along the way. The everyday price for the CCNA practice exam is over $100, so now is a great time to pick it up for just $59. All of our practice exams will be discounted from now through August 31. If you have any questions about the CCNA Practice Exam (or any of our other exams for Microsoft MCITP certification, CompTIA A+ certification, Cisco certification and many more) give our guys a call at 1-800-418-6789. Thanks and good luck on your exam.

Take Your CCNP All the Way to the FBI

Friday, July 16th, 2010
If you’re interested in a career as an IT professional, but don’t want to be stuck in a boring office, then maybe the FBI is right for you. Investigating high-tech crime is becoming a huge priority, and the FBI needs talented people with excellent tech skills to work on those cases. One way to join the ranks of Mulder, Scully and all of those other cool FBI agents is to have your bachelor’s degree and one of Cisco’s advanced certifications like the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE).
Recently Cisco has streamlined the entire CCNP program,

ROUTE (642-902)

According to the Cisco, passing the ROUTE (642-902) exam will “certify that the successful candidate has the knowledge and skills necessary to use advanced IP addressing and routing in implementing scalable and secure Cisco ISR routers connected to LANs and WANs.”
SWITCH (642-813)
SWITCH (642-813) became available on March 10, 2010. The Cisco Learning Network site says that passing this exam “will certify that the successful candidate has important knowledge and skills necessary to to plan, configure and verify the implementation of complex enterprise switching solutions using Cisco’s Campus Enterprise Architecture.”
TSHOOT (642-832)
TSHOOT is Cisco’s toubleshooting and problem solving component of the CCNP. It became available on April 30, 2010.  “TSHOOT 642-832 exam will certify that the successful candidate has important knowledge and skills necessary to (1) plan and perform regular maintenance on complex enterprise routed and switched networks and (2) use technology-based practices and a systematic ITIL-compliant approach to perform network troubleshooting.”
